We had a similar meltdown of the spooler system on a very important
server at work and had a msft tech rebuild the print hive and whatnot.
 Totally unacceptable.

Did you mention what version of windows?  I would recommend trying
with a recent livecd to see if ubuntu picks it up with modern cups.
