Enlightenment's stated purpose has always been "look awesome".  The lead developer is an artist who learned c specifically so he could make a window manager that wasn't ugly.

Back then E was considered disgustingly heavy and slow.  E16 today is the same codebase and considered crazy light and fast.  This humors me to no end.

E17 is the next version of E, and is VERY different from E16.  It's a different window manager altogether, if you've tried one you can't say you've tried both.
