This is how your window manager is able to respond to keyboard
shortcuts for things like minimizing or maximizing windows, or
bringing up an application window. Etc. It's also why you have
'secure' and 'nonsecure' X sessions. Check out the difference between
the -X and -Y flags in ssh.

Also, try the 'xev' command. http://www.xfree86.org/current/xev.1.html
