The GoFlex Series of NAS devices from Seagate are very reasonable. Not
much more than the price of the drive. Includes ability to access the
shares from outside the local net, with control of access permissions
and multiple folders to put things into. Linux underpinnings, and USB
port for additional storage.
ArchLinuxARM.org has instructions for installing an alternative
kernel, using the GoFlex as a PogoPlug work-alike.
One of the considerations: A dedicated ARM-based server appliance can
be much more compact, cooler, and energy-efficient than a full-sized
machine, and the cost for components other than the HD can be very
reasonable.
