Bob,
I tend to buy tech books and I have had to buy direct from the
publisher in some cases.
B & N has 'Free book Fridays' which lets you read books they are
promoting for free. As you can guess, they are of varying quality. I
tend to get them because I'm a sucker for free stuff, but I sometimes
only read a chapter or two before I want to delete it.
I've only had my nook color for a couple months, so I can't speak to
whether B & N ebooks are available indefinitely. All I can say is
that they are so far. In fact, one of my gripes is that I haven't
found a way to remove an ebook without connecting it to my computer
and deleting the file.
