[GRLUG] more keymapping

I figured out how to map my keys without xmodmap, I hacked my evdev file
and it worked great.

Now I'm moving on to other things. This keyboard has multimedia keys, and
they send the right data when pressed. For example, when I press the mute
button it sends XF86AudioMute.

I've never made keys like this work before, mostly because in gnome it
happens automagically, and I don't use gnome. I'm using e16, which
doesn't care what those keys do.

Is it possible to make them work on an OS level, rather than the desktop
environment level? I'm using alsa, it would be cool if pressing that
button had the same effect as opening alsamixer, cursoring over to the
Master channel and pressing M.

Any ideas?
