xev shows both keyboard and mouse events. I recently used it to figure
out why tap-to-click wasn't working on e17 (hat tip to the guys on #e
for teaching me something). It didn't require any switches. It opens a
small window for recording mouse events (it only shows them when the
cursor is in the box).
