I have Boxee setup on a Linux box, but it has not been updated in a long
long time and it is locking up for me too often. It is my main way to watch
TV. I don't have cable or satellite, just Boxee. I also don't have HDMI
available so it makes it hard to get a Boxee Box. HDMI is Boxee's only
video output. So I am actually extremely happy with Boxee and would highly
recommend the Boxee Box, if you want to spend ~$200 and have HDMI.

I found a way to play local media on Roku using Plex (
http://www.plexapp.com/). I am running Plex on a Linux server and it is
working great. Only real complaint is the high resource requirement to
stream HD (which I don't have a need for because I have equipment from the
stone ages - svideo only).

For $50 I figured I would give Roku a try. It shouldl be good enough to get
me through until I get a new TV and have $200 extra. I only am looking for
a local media and Pandora player. I am not a fan of Netflix, but Vudu on
Boxee Box looks great. I hope Roku has a channel with on-demand movie/tv
rentals.
