I'm guessing it's a bootloader issue? See if this helps point you in
the right direction.

As far as distros that support GPT without tweaking; I don't know. I'd
try either Arch or Gentoo, but they only qualify because customization
and configuration is part and parcel to setting them up, which puts
them at nearly the exact opposite end of that spectrum from
RedHat/CentOS and Ubuntu.
