Anyone using one of these, or its predecessor,
the 900? Consumers Report tested 6 netbooks,
shown in its June, 2009 issue, and doesn't seem
impressed with any of them. But one reviewer
on Amazon said he installed the Eee PC distribution
of Linux, customised for this series of machines,
and even with the "Atom" CPU the thing flies.
So CR is not impressed, but many Linux enthusiasts
are. Anyone here have one? If so, what are your
experiences? One thing that always comes up is
the small, crummy keyboard.
I also note there is a new Eee PC model with a
Celeron processor which is about $50 cheaper
yet. Whether the battery life is as good, one of
the goals of the machines, is not clear.
Anyway, the game here seems to be yet cheaper
machines. The screens are small, so the machine
shouldn't cost much more than a DVD player with
a similar size screen.
I've been running Puppy Linux on a rather large
desktop, with 4GB of RAM and just 1GB of flash.
And no hard drive. It is essentially a BIG netbook.
But one gets the idea of how fast the machine
comes up, and runs. Those features in a small,
affordable box has appeal. Puppy does 95% of
what I do with my machine daily, handeles a wide
variety of hardware, and yet the distribution is
about 100MB out of the box.
I'm sure netbooks are only in their early phase,
and could get much cheaper and more capable
yet. This might be a discussion topic over time.
