Ok. So you're dealing with a circa 10 year old system. Computers of
that speed (and quite a bit faster) are available in various states of
disrepair (usually software problems) from numerous sources. Perhaps
the most fruitful being Freecycle. In a world of windows-forced 3
year upgrades, there's no reason for any *nix user to have an x86 box
more than 6 years old. The Windows folks are quite used to junking
their machines as soon as they're more than a single Windows release
behind. Businesses, schools, and local government frequently give
them away by the pallet.
