For what it's worth, I've always had the same issue on every debian box 
that has sound (with the exception of one, which KDE automagically took 
care of).  Modules always loaded properly, etc., but by default, 
everything is always muted.  I would have to open alsamixer and unmute 
everything... then everything worked.
