I use softether vpn (www.softether.org) to run a vpn server on a
digitalocean vps. I originally used my local server but as I added more
connectinos it was easier to setup the vps.

You connect the host and remote computers to the softether vpn. You get
an ip address from the vpn.

You then connect from the remote device nomachine software to the host
device nomachine software using the vpn ip address of the host computer.

You can test a setup by installing nomachine on 2 computers in your
local home network.

After you see how they connect then you can expand it with a vpn.

As you say this is for a home network then softether and nomachine are
free to use.
