Not so much a safety issue as the potential for off-gassing of acid
vapor. With careful charging this is not a big issue, but the vapor
will tend to accelerate corrosion of nearby things. In a large
warehouse no one notices, but in an enclosed garage it can be a bit
annoying. Electric cars back in the lead acid powered days usually
rusted from the inside out.
