On newer Linux flavors, the windows key is quite useful - a quick touch
displays an overview of all active desktops, and one can click on a desktp
or application ON that desktop to switch.

Quite sweet!! *Especially* as it falls right next to the left pinkie,
which is the normal <ctl> action.
