I just updated my 12.04 (64 bit) instance from kernel 3.2.0-23 to
3.2.0-26. No problem rebooting. Have you considered trying updates in
a VM before committing them to a real installation? (Actually, with
the current faster CPUs and better virtualization, I am tempted to run
an increasing share of my systems as VMs. That way, I'm not committed
to a particular platform.

When You updated was it thru the update-manager?
This machine has 2 new 3TB drives and I got a warning about their partition being off Hence the update.
Root drive s just 2TB.
