@Clay I think you would need to use an externally powered hdd. Since the
whole computer runs on USB power, I don't think it outputs enough to power
a hdd.
My idea for them would be to have one in every room of my house and have
them integrated with a central X10 server, controlling all lights,
appliances, thermostat, etc. Each one would act as a voice interface for
the system, and also a display, if one were attached. The central server
would know what each one was capable of (i.e. if it had a display, etc), so
I could say "Mr. Butlertron (that's what I'm calling the project)
slideshow", and the command would be sent to the server, the server would
see what room the command came from, check that it has a display, then
start a slideshow. I could also say "Mr. Butlertron lights on" and it would
turn on all the lights in the room I was in, or "Mr. Butlertron dining room
lights on" to turn on the lights in the dining room. In my bathroom I'd
have a display behind the mirror, so I could catch up on the news, weather,
etc. while I'm brushing my teeth.
Since it would be a simple known set of commands, I could use a continually
self modifying dictionary to keep decent speech recognition. Of course,
this all depends on having a good speech recognition system, and I've had a
hard time just wrapping my head around getting one of the open source ones
to work at all. i.e. get to the point where it can actually listen for
speech. Of course, using a central server would also allow me to use other
UI's, like an Android interface.
The other more obvious use is as cheap XBMC boxes.
