Alt-F2, r<Enter> - didn't work?

You can go to a console and "killall -9 gnome-shell".  gnome-shell will
be restarted, your session will resume in the same shell.   Assuming
your problem is actually gnome-shell and not that something else [like
the X server] has kicked it.
