Admittedly, the "MediaWiki" look is very common and well-known.

My thought was that the front page would be something like a portal to
existing things like the ones I noted; planet entries, IRC, the
mailing list.

Anything else wouldn't be on the main page. A scratch space. Not
explicitly organized. A wiki doesn't have to be deep or highly
sophisticated to be useful.
