I've only found a couple of viable alternatives to Google Groups for
discussion lists.
1. Running your own mailman, which includes doing your own spam
filtering (very not fun for a group) and moderated signups (damn
bots). It's not a welcome burden for a poor volunteer list
administrator.
2. Oh, there's also Yahoo Groups, but that is like taking a Google
Group and coating it with with annoying ads and a constant fear of
being bought by Microsoft. It stinks.
