Do any of the live-distro's run SMART?  That would be a good test [if
the live distro supported SMART].  Just boot the live distro and "dd
if=/dev/sda of=/dev/null bs=4096" and see if SMART fires any events. 

Even without SMART that is my favorite way to check a physical disk.
