I figured that was the case (I live in Grandville, but am in Ottawa
county. Just about any auto-checker gets confused), but I was annoyed
that they didn't even read my initial query, which pointed out that I
already have ADSL.

I'm still fishing around for that 'someone else' to call. (Though I
never considered that SBC might sell channel-bonded ADSL). The only
other response I've had is an ISP in *Seattle* who gave me a very
competent reply, but noted that the latency would likely be high,
since their POP is on the other side of the continent.
