More or less, but not quite. Pulse audio can use ALSA devices as both a
source and a sink. Modern applications stream their audio to Pulse
which multiplexes it to a sink [your sound card, possibly an ALSA
device, but not necessarily]. Many applications accomplish this by
streaming audio to a virtual ALSA device that feeds into Pulse; then
Pulse streams to the actual ALSA device. There is also some krufty
helper for applications that still use the [ancient] OSS sink.
