Depending on the topics you choose, this is entirely believable. Some
of them are extremely broad like 'Internet' or 'Computers'.

Only the organizer pays money, and that is for an account. Once you've
paid ($72/6 months), you can create many groups without further fees.
Members join for free.

I paid for an account to help us organize the GrWebDev, so I could now
create groups for GRPUG and GRLUG without additional fees. The biggest
downside is that the organizer's name and photo are shown on every
page related to the group. I find it annoying, especially in groups
with multiple organizers or no formal structure.
