Far simpler to go with a NAS appliance - we've had good luck with the 
LG N2R1; it'a a Debian kernel, a number of folks have published 
updates that include things like nfs, ssh, rsync, ..

Less than $300 for 2x1T (RAID1 = 1T), this model also has a DVD 
rewriter - small, compact, fanless. ARM9.
