[GRLUG] non-linux: USB drive as HDD

I've got an Hitachi external USB drive that my Win7 box sees as a "Hard
Disk Drive" rather than as a "Device with Removable Storage." As such
the "Safely Remove Hardware" doesn't see it.

If the drive light on the external HDD is not on or flickering, can I
assume it's safe just to pull the USB plug? Or is there some other
process I should use?

Any ideas why Windows is treating it this way? One thought I had is that
the drive has a bunch of Acronis tib's on it. Could these be confusing
Windows?
