[GRLUG] Sound issues

A while back I mention that I am
having problems with the sound
system under Kubuntu 10.04.
While playing a long list of tunes,
using Amarok, it just quits, usually
between track.
I did a little digging, and apparently
there's been a total rewrite of Amarok,
after version 1.4. So while 2.30 looks
more up to date, and hopefully more
bug free, than 1.4, it ain't necessarily
so.
Some pundits are claiming that the
rewrite is a significant step backwards
from 1.4, which seemed to work well
enough in my experience. Features
like random track selection are now
gone, if only temporarily.
One apparent pundit was sufficiently
ticked that he rolled his own player:

I did find a hack to get around the
sound system quitting without a reboot:
alsa force-reload
I make sure to quit Amarok before
running.
Anyway, Amarok might be a case of
"if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Version
2.3.1 has recently been announced.
Maybe that will fix some of the more
annoying issues. But suffice it to say
that there a world of grousing out there.
