According to the devil's dictionary,
a cynic is someone who sees the
world as it is, not as it ought to be.
A technical person's view of the
world?
I think I take that one. Maybe
flavored with what some electricians
try to charge people for things.
I knew a plumber in NJ that worked
for NJ Transit before he retired. He
did general plumbing on the side.
I had him help me put in a dishwasher.
He did all the plumbing work, but
was afraid to touch the electrical side,
which became my job.
The Job? Hook two 125VAC wires to
the unit unit wire nuts. To him,
anything electrical looked like magic,
while I didn't like to do my own plumbing
because water in a house where it
doesn't belong is always trouble. So
I did 3% of the work, and he did the
rest. It's probably best that people
don't get in to what they don't know if
there's any potential danger.
That magic part enables unscrupulous
electricians, those without "integrity"
in their company name I gather, to
charge people plenty for doing things
like changing a wall switch. And to
carry another point along, you have
to be able to differentiate the good
ones - with integrity in their company
names - from the bad ones. All part
of the calculus of life.... ;-)
