Whatever works. I wouldn't call it 'wimping out' I would call it "trying
the simple things first". Alot of times its something small that can be
fixed with reinstalling. If you are using Ubuntu or debian you can use
'dpkg-reconfigure <package-name>' to reconfigure without reinstalling
the package. This works in most cases for me.

Don't worry about the lack of experience. Only time gives you that. The
more time you spend, the more familiar you become. You've got your foot
in the door. Now we're gonna hook you, reel you in, make you a geek, and
soon you'll answer all the questions, and do our bidding muahaha! just
