Well the new install works fine. Must have been something in the
opensuse that somehow got screwed up. It will be nice if this also
solves my screen-darkening problem, but I suspect that's an inverter
problem, from what I read. 

The new install kept most of my old desktop with the panels I had,
except for a number of missing panel icons. Strange hybrid between
opensuse and ubuntu looks...
