Well, there is Gromit.
>From the README file: "Gromit may drastically slow down your X-Server,
especially when you draw
very thin lines. It makes heavily use of the shape extension, which is
quite expensive if you paint a complex pattern on screen."
I poked around the source a bit, but it's not well commented. Though
it is fairly small. Perhaps you could make better sense of what's
going on if you're familiar with GTK. I'm not so interested in the
method as I am the result personally.

I found my bug (and a patch. woot) at

run with this.
