In case someone happens across this thread later, it's worth noting
that VMWare supports splitting disk images among files <=2GB in size,
which may bring it under the threshhold of large file performance
penalties for XFS. (I haven't used XFS or looked at its code, so I
can't be sure.)

BTW...You guys are nuts...I was driving from GRR to ATL
Tuesday-midnight to Wednesday afternoon, and my phone kept beeping
every couple minutes saying I had another new email.  I thought I'd
started some kind of flamewar by semi-defending Windows.  Instead, I
find a very interesting discussion of filesystems. :)
