We have some engineers at work who are starting to learn python, and we
put together this short list. I know you asked about books, but thought
I'd keep the website links in too.
Here are some resources:
http://diveintopython.org/toc/index.html (old but still good)
http://docs.python.org/
http://www.catonmat.net/blog/learning-python-programming-language-through-video-lectures/
(haven't watched it myself)
http://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0008/
http://www.doughellmann.com/PyMOTW/
Mark added:
I think the python essential reference is a good paper-book resource
the first few chapters are a solid and fast intro to how python works
http://www.swaroopch.com/notes/Python is a more gentile intro
the learning python book by mark lutz is a gentile intro, but it
actually hits most all of the "gotcha" type things at exactly the
right point
I think doing 200+ python seminars before writing the second edition
made that a much, much better book
