Good presentation is utility.  Compared to the LINUX desktop of even a
few years ago - I'm more than happy to pay for the additional energy.
Features like document thumbnails, window transparency, and
componentized user interfaces definitely increase my productivity as
both a user and developer.

I *think* the problem was not present before XGL was enabled, I'll
double check.

The NVidia driver; I briefly see the NVidia logo when X starts and the
NVidia-GNOME utilities seem to work.
