Ya I remember those days pretty well myself. Sometimes spending a few
nights getting all the necessary source packages I needed. I switched
to Gentoo and never went back to slackware.Although I always kept
copies for computers without internet. It always was pretty well
stocked with programs out of the box. And I always recommended it to
people who really wanna learn linux. It was a valueable learning
experience for me, everything I know stems from Slackware. Emerge was
the first package manager I really tried out tho, and setting up and
running gentoo was scary at first. But I learned, and became
comfortable with it. Now I like the debian based distros. I definitly
would encourage new users to experiment with different distros, and
find thier ideal one. Debian is definitly one of the few grandfather
distros that still attract a lot of new users. And Ubuntu is really
taking debian up another notch in the desktops users field. It has
been pretty much unbeatable in distrowatch top list.
