x86-64 performs 64-bit *calculations* natively. There are only 40
memory address lines (or there were in Hammer), giving a
directly-addressable range of 1TB. This was touted as a great thing,
because it meant you could memmap your entire hard disk. Of course,
now you can get a 1TB hard disk for $200 on Newegg.
