I don't know what was mentioned but it sounds like you want denyhosts.

http://denyhosts.sourceforge.net/

it automatically adds deadbeats to your hosts.deny file and can be set 
to proactively download known deadbeat IP's so that they are blocked 
before they even try to attack you.
