On my old P4 2.4GHz with 512MB of RAM, I discovered that Ubuntu
started getting sluggish when 7.10 came out, due to their special
effects.  But that might have been because I almost always use onboard
video.

(FWIW, my solution was to switch to wmii for a window manager.)
