The only reason I bought Dell machines in the past, were because of the
$299 machines, with keyboard and speakers. without any "deals" to get
that price. Other than that, I either bought machines from
$LOCAL_RETAILER or built them myself.
Oh, I did buy an 800MHz Inspiron from a Friend that wanted to sell it.
for $350 with everything involved. I only had to spend about $50 on a
new keyboard, modem/NIC module (not then originally) and display frame
(hinges were going bad). And about $100 on 2 new high-capacity batteries
for it. They are 3rd party batteries. But I can now travel for 7 hours
without a re-charge.

It doesn't matter how long Dell will support Linux, it has already said
that most of the users said "community support" is good enough. I can
and have installed Linux on Dell machine for much longer than many knew
it could be done. I also have install Linux on machine that were no
longer supported by a long out of business company.
