That's remarkable.  I spent around ten hours over several weeks either
trying to get the NVidia driver working on my roommate's Ubuntu box,
or, conversely, making X work again when he tried it. (How many times
does a guy have to try the same approach before you can convince him
it won't work?)  I finally wrote down instructions on fixing
it--change the Display->Driver line in xorg.conf--and those directions
worked for as long as he kept them.

Of course, I just received an email last Wednesday asking for help
again...he tried the same approach again after he moved out, but
thought that maybe, if he emailed me the error, I would be able to
diagnose it for him. (Despite having seen that error over and over,
prior to that.)
