The Sansa's are decent...  Sandisk has even donated some to a Rockbox
dev (although support is only in CVS).  If you can take the hit in the
wallet, nearly the entire iPod series is well supported under Rockbox.
 Many iRiver models are as well, however, they've all been either
discontinued or are even pricier than the iPods.

If you don't know what Rockbox gets you...  it's an open-source
firmware for DAPs.  On a device with suitable hardware (all the
aforementioned work) you get Ogg, MP3, Speex, FLAC, and many other
codecs, gapless playback, tons of plugins, spoken menu support, and
firmware upgrades that actually add features and fix bugs.
