JBoss had something good going on. Their product costs less
per/year than it would cost to get a MONTH of Web'sFear. It also
includes developer support. That's unheard of, but makes absolute
sense. I bet that goes away.
Anybody remember what happend to "Red Hat Database?" This is a
bit different, and IMHO, worse. They have a version of Jonas
they've been selling as a Java app server that never gets any press.
Perhaps the revenue capabilities of JBoss will stir them to do a
better job of managing the product than those two examples.
I don't think RH is evil, I just don't think they really know what
"Enterprise" is supposed to mean. Of course, that whole word means
so many different things to different people that it's meaningless.
Then again, maybe selling out to RH was a defensive move to get Oracle
off their backs. Oracle is a company with a great database
surrounded by a bunch of junk (OAS anybody?). You have to admire
JBoss for holding out since Oracle has considerable amounts of money
to throw at them. I still think Red Hat came out on top of this
deal by a large margin. I guess this saves them the trouble of
going public for themselves.
At least with open source, you can just stop paying for support if
you're not getting your money's worth and keep your software.
Another company could easily start doing what JBoss does today and
it's totally legal. Postgres is still doing fine even after the
RHDB debacle, so there's hope for JBoss.
