A few seconds after it starts dialing, or a few seconds after you stop
hearing the modem handshake?

If the latter, it sounds like an authentication error.  Assuming you
haven't changed your ppp settings in the last month, there's a good
chance your ISP is refusing access. (Call them up and check on the
status of the account.)
