if you are running a redhat variant, take out the line in your ethernet 
config file with the ethernet address and you'll get the behavior that 
you're looking for.  of course, when you do this, if you have multiple 
nics, redhat will then name your eth devices in the regular linux way, in 
ascending order according to pci slot.
