Oh, and to actually answer your question, I know of no way to really 
hide things from root so I think it would be impossible. Well, you could 
put it in a directory that is hard to get to (like, it starts with a 
space or some weird character) but then iwconfig will still tell you 
what it is. So you'd have to hack iwconfig and I dont think anyone has 
done it for you yet.

However, do these students need root access to linux? Could you instead 
set them up user accounts with more limited access?
