Bah. I spoke too soon. The dual-screen setup works great, but I took
my laptop home last night and fired it up, only to discover that X
wouldn't start. I had to revert back to my old xorg.conf (single
screen) before it would work. Verified it this morning; the dual-head
config works fine if the 2nd monitor is attached, but if I boot up
without it, the LCD on the laptop remains blank and X fails to start.
Here's the relevant stuff from my Xorg log:
------------------------------------------------------------------
(II) fglrx(1): === [atiddxPreInit] === begin, [s]
(EE) fglrx(1): Quitting secondary screen -- no monitor specified.
(EE) fglrx(1): PreInit failed
(II) fglrx(1): === [atiddxPreInit] === end

Seems to me like it should "just work" on the primary display, even if
it can't detect a secondary monitor. Why does X completely die?
I'll attach my xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log files, just in case some
generous soul feels like looking at them and helping me out.
System Specs:
HP Compaq nc8430 notebook
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600, 256MB
1680x1050 LCD on notebook
1280x1024 display on secondary monitor
Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Etch)
Sorry to keep spamming the list... it's always a pain setting up a new
machine, and this one's pretty new, so there isn't much out there on
Google to help me troubleshoot some of this stuff.
Thanks to all who have helped so far!!
