I also don't think I could ever use anything but :wq.  If for no other 
reason than I often use :w alone.

As for using something for years and learning something, I learned about 
:x about 3 months ago reading the vim cheat sheet on the VIM Mug that 
Thinkgeek is selling.  There were several things on there I didn't know, 
and I even own the vi book.

Learn something every day.
