[GRLUG] sound issues RESOLVED

After reading many many forums, someone said to open 
gnome-volumne-control, go to preferences, and add a new device called 
External Amplifier (it's in a list).  Then check it as "enabled", and it 
works.

So I'm all set.  I really want to know what THAT did however, so I don't 
have to rely on gnome-volume-control to make it work in the future.
