I have an idea but revealing it may reveal the depth of my ignorance so
for now I will not answer.  ;-)

The ALSA module for your hardware appears to be snd-intel8x0.  As root,
do a 'modprobe snd-intel8x0'; FC *should* have this as a precompiled
module but then, alsaconf *should* be included...
