In short, if a user creates a shortcut that points to a location that
isn’t available at the time when the weekly scheduled system maintenance
task is running, the shortcuts are considered as broken and therefore
automatically deleted.

I rolled out a few win7 machines lately and 2 users called last week to report that most of their desktop shortcuts had been deleted mysteriously. It turns out Win7 scheduled maintenance automatically (by default) deletes any broken shortcuts for you. So if your mapped network drives go offline.. all your shortcuts get deleted for you.<br>

Well, that's consistent at least. They decide what you should want to<br>
do and how you should want to do it, and do it for you. Lots of<br>
surprises, and keeps you on your toes.<br>
